Lovely story in a beautiful, unknown country
In the breathtaking landscape of rural Kyrgyzstan, Isabelle a Parisian woman has to fight against prejudices of her fiancé's relatives and neighbours who welcome her warmly thinking she's just an acquaintance Aidar brought as a guest to the wedding taking place in the village. Isabelle soon gets accustomed to the different lifestyle, respecting the people and their lives, eventually making friends. But there are still some obstacles to overcome to keep the love of Aidar. A very nice example of the clash of cultures and that you can be understood without knowing a word in the foreign language by really 'listening' to people.
Breathtaking scenery, thought-provoking and interesting story
This is one of those independent movies that will never reach the great audience, one of those movies you have to look for. It's a pity, because it is a noteworthy piece of cinema, firstly because it is focused on a reality, on a country we don't know much about, and I discovered a wonderful landscape and a culture I had never seen or heard about. Secondly, because the clash of cultures represented by the Parisian free-thinking girl and the Kyrgyz people can be transposed, on a different level, also to western society, where deep contrasts between people belonging to different cultures and religions often cause deep problems of co-habitation and reciprocal respect. The message is comforting, supporting the idea that respect for tradition should go hand in hand with reason and common sense, and not turn into passatism. The young are those who have the task and often the burden to find a possible, however difficult, balance between past culture and modern world. Tradition is a precious heritage to be protected and respected, but not an untouchable and fossilized set of out of time rites and everyone has the right or the duty to question and to revise them according to modern sensibility, which has also a value of its own. This is an issue that concerns every culture, every religion, especially in today's multi-ethnic ad multicultural societies. The movie, despite the slow pace at some moments, offers also funny moments, the two main characters are well paired and prove good performances, especially Isabelle, who is portrayed, at the beginning, as too ingenuously gullible, but undergoes a positive and credible evolution as she gets more in contact with the real nature of the local people. But what really impresses the viewer is the sublime landscape, rendered through long and vivid shooting, which makes those images stick in our memory.
Traditional values vs Happiness
"The wedding chest" is the film about a young man, whose name is Aidar. He is an ordinary guy from a Kyrgyz village who is leaving to work in France. His whole family is looking forward to his return.His parent are really proud of him because not all of the peole can travel to abroaad, moreover to get a job. After some time, Aidar decides to return to his native village. He returns not alone, but accompanied by his colleague, the remarkable Isabel. They are greeted by the whole village. Isabelle, in turn, is amzed by the hospitality of the local residents and the beauty of the Kyrgyz nature.What else can go wrong? It all begins with the parents learning that Isabel is not a colleague at all; she came to Kyrgyzstan as Aidar's bride. Aidar's parents are people from a generation who deeply respect the traditions and customs of culture. According to the customs, Kyrgyz "djigit" can not marry a girl of another nationality. These rules are the norms of lifestyle within the society. And their son, beloved Aidar, is going to go against these norms. The picture of Nurbek Egen shows the clash of two generations and their interests. On the one hand, we see Aidar, who desperately tries to protect his love, and on the other hand there are his parents, who defend their authority in the village and ask their son to observe the traditions. We see that time is passing, and people are changing, but the norms in the village remain the same. And then the question arises, who should concede? Should Aidar let his love go, or should parents close their eyes to compliance with the rules? Aidar knew that his decision to marry Isabel will not be accepted by society, which is why at the beginning of the movie, he hides the fact that she is his fiancée. Society is not ready to accept such a deviation from the norm. The whole situation is aggravated by the fact that the family is considered to be damned. It was Aidar who was meant to save the family from the curse, but he goes against the rules. He chooses love and remains right. Isabele, Aidar's bride also plays an important role, she was ready to give up their usual life and trade it to life in the village, if only Aidar and his family recognize her as his girlfriend. In this film, the norms set by society create only obstacles to the happiness of young people. And people live to feel happy. Despite all the obstacles, pure love wins and parents accept a foreign bride. The film makes you think about the importance of changes in people's lives. Humanity is driven by progress and the norms also change.
