He winds up on the street, homeless and hung over, but is offered a lifeline when an old friend, Rachel, lets him sleep in her flower shop van and try to get his life back on track. At first it seems as though Alex might take the chance he's been given, write some songs, and take advantage of a new gig playing at a prestigious club which could also secure him a recording deal. But Alex can't get over Jen, fantasizes about her as the perfect woman, and little by little the drinking takes over. Eventually he is booed off stage because he's too drunk to remember the words of his own songs, forcing his new manager to dump him. When Alex sees Jen with one of his friends it is the final straw, and he tries to drown himself, only to be saved by a passing jogger. Rachel reads him the riot act, reveals her own alcoholic past, and gets Alex to start ...

Terrific!
I just got around to seeing to seeing this film for the very first time yesterday, so apologies for being late in the process! Anyway, I just wanted to say how much I loved watching this! From the brilliant acting, the great camera work, and remarkable score throughout the movie, I was hooked! This is a great story of how someone can change their life around no matter how many chances you give them, and what obstacles stand in their way, they will always "come good" in the end. A true masterpiece of film. I will be watching this again and again.
Good company for an hour and a half
At some point in this film the leading lady suggests that everyone deserves a last chance. This might even be true. At all events it is, on several levels, the theme of this rewarding film. Stones, made on a miniscule budget and directed by Roydon Turner, is a serious look at alcohol addiction. This is not as gloomy as it sounds; the charm of the leading players makes us hope for the luckiest of conclusions. The film also contains eleven original songs by Alexander McKay, expertly woven into the fabric of the story. McKay also plays the lead. Alexander McKay, on acting debut, does an accomplished and engaging job as Alex while Alan Booty gives a fine three-minute cameo as Alex's alcoholic father, whom he sees only in the pub. Kirsten Hazel Smith (reminiscent of the young Jenny Agutter) makes a fetching Rachel with whom anyone would fall in love -except for Alex who imagines Jen will take him back. Stones is an impressive feature film debut for TV commercial director Roydon Turner, and his writing partner, Don Macnab-Stark, miraculous on so small a budget. The music track should appeal to most people, the screenplay hits the right notes, the dialogue is expertly delivered, the leads are engaging, and the production values meet requirements. It is hard to imagine the curmudgeon who would not enjoy it.
