Dominique, a cold-hearted professor suffering from kidney failure, attends the Smith and Wesson family reunion to approach estranged sister, CeCe, for a transplant. However, deep seeded wounds from catastrophic childhood events remain unresolved between the two sisters. At great emotional expense, CeCe confronts past demons to find forgiveness and healing. Struggling with vulnerability, Dominique must do some soul searching to address personal shortcomings in order to save her own life. The story also involves Dominique's brother, Richard, and his daughters, Kayla and Elsa. Richard abandoned Kayla when she was an infant and she regards Elsa as a scapegoat for her resentment. Kayla's unbridled aggressions explode at the family picnic before she learns that her mom, Richard's vindictive ex-wife, had lied about him.
