Pendekar Tongkat Emas is an Indonesian movie? I did not realize the movie is will be this good, it was beyond my expectation. I thought the movie was made in Hollywood. The actions scenes are the main highlight of the movie, the camera work on these scenes are very commendable. Even the fights are conducted with simple sticks or canes but there was no sequence breaks or oddity. Acting was pretty decent, story line was smooth there was no illogical twist or turns. The movie is a typical revenge story, there is no originality there. If the story was something new then I would have given better rating. End Remark: This a nice action movie and recommended for the action lovers. Hope that you will enjoy the film.

Story is well scripted, if a bit usual for marshal arts movies :) Many of the characters are strong women, which felt very good. Story is quite sad at times. The fighting scenes are mostly with staffs with some hand to hand mixed in, all of it quite good and well choreographed in my opinion. Acting is well enough most of the time, some sudden time shifts could have been handled better I think, but thats the directors prerogative :) I saw it in original language with subtitles and was pleasantly surprised when I heard it was Indonesian.

  • A Colossal Disappointment

As an Indonesian, This is the movie that i've been waiting for like decades. Unfortunately the movie turns out to be completely different from what i expected. I thought it will bring back the memories of Indonesian classic Silat movies such as Saur Sepuh or Tutur Tinular with modern touch, sadly it was trapped by the producers ambition to make it looks so Hollywood which make it already failed from the beginning. There's almost no story in the movie, basically it's only about few characters, no supporting cast to add intrigues to the stories, the flashback is not working and looks hilarious. The pace is very slow til you bored and just wanted the movie to be end soon. Costume design and art direction are not attractive at all, especially when they declare that Perguruan Tongkat Emas is the biggest but the building is not more than a village farmer house. The cast of Eva Celia as the main character is a disaster, i'm not convinced by her acting, her body language still very much like Jakarta's teenage girl nowadays. As for Nicholas Saputra, he is playing the same Rangga character(from Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?) but this time with warrior costume instead of school uniform, such a wasted. My appreciation goes to Reza Rahadian and Tara Basro as Biru and Gerhana and also for the music score and cinematography. My words to Mira Lesmana and Riri Riza, please appreciate our Indonesian classic Silat movies legacy, don't ruin them with your ambition. I wish you will make another Silat movies in the future, bring back some of the legend actor in your cast and get some advice from those filmmakers to make the movie more Nusantara.

  • Maybe a bit boring for some people but it delivers.

This is one of Indonesian action film that I can enjoy beside The Raid II Berandal. But not like The Raid, the story a bit slow. I think for this kind of film it's necessary. The action scenes suprisingly has good choreography and camera work, even if almost all actors and actresses aren't from martial artist background (except the kid I guess, that kid definitely a martial artist, he is that good). Acting is believable and can give you real understanding about what the story is. This film is enjoyable enough to watch.
