Out of Left Field: The Making of the Chinese Baseball Team (2008) Reviews

  • Going from nothing to a contending team in only four years...but still rather incomplete as a documentary.

There was no baseball in China in the 21st century, as the sport disappeared after the Chinese Revolution in 1949. But, with the Olympics coming to Beijing in 2008, the government wanted to field a true contender, as the host nation automatically was allowed in the competition--and they didn't wan to embarrass themselves. So, they obtained two American pro baseball coaches and worked hard to create a team from scratch. This film documents that process--with the difficulties, successes and the like on their way to the Olympics. It is odd that the film ONLY goes up until the Olympics and never mentions how they did in Beijing. You would assume they did very well because of the tempo of the film--which is NOT the case at all. In fact, of the eight teams in the competition, China came in eighth--just behind the Netherlands! Despite this major omission, is the film any good? Well, it's not bad but the film also looks like it is a home movie and has that old VCR camera look. Also, because it is so low budget, there isn't a lot of music or polish. Additionally, the Chinese players seemed amazingly non-energetic throughout the whole thing--making it more difficult to connect with them or care. Mildly interesting only.
