My Summer Prince (2016) Reviews

  • Terrific romantic comedy!

I've watched quite a few Hallmark movies and this was, by far, one of the best I've seen in a long time. Taylor Cole plays Mandy, a PR assistant whose boss (Lauren Holly) comes down with chicken pox while on assignment. That's when ambitious Mandy decides to pretend to be her own boss, and takes on their new client herself: a dashingly handsome prince (Jack Turner). Of course the two fall in love, but what will happen when Prince Charming finds out the truth about his new friend? First off... the chemistry between the two leads is terrific. Taylor Cole is stunningly beautiful but also cute, and Jack Turner is adorable as the immature Prince. (It doesn't hurt that the film keeps finding reasons for him to take his shirt off.) Lauren Holly and Marina Sirtis are really funny as the two resident authority figures... and both get their strong dramatic moments too. I don't know where they filmed (probably Canada, because most Hallmark movies are shot there), but its gorgeous and the cinematography is nice. Overall, I thought this was a fun, colorful romantic comedy with great pacing, snappy dialogue, and solid direction. With bigger stars, this should have been a theatrical feature!

  • Pink dreams, plastic and rhinestones

This production seems to be the product of a child's fantasy. If thinking of watching this Hallmark TV-movie, skip the real facts of life and simply try to deal with the creative story line and enjoy the gullible pink fantasy about royalty. The cast is pretty OK, but everything else in the movie related to the "Kingdom of Edgemere" is all baloney, that's when the plastic, rhinestones and pink imagination take over it all. However, have a laugh and go with it if you want, it's a feelgood movie made for the Summer. I feel generous by rewarding this movie 6 out of 10, but if you're a Hallmark TV-movie fan, you might like it even more.

  • Hallmark Movies are not supposed to be perfect. There are supposed to make you happier!

I've been reading the reviews on this title and I think some people don't understand what Hallmark offers. It offers simple stories that usually end happily. The royal series does the same. In this movie, the two main actors make a cute couple. The story is, of course, somewhat predictable, but not entirely so. The audience watching the movie probably is from the age of 12 and up. Too complex would ruin it for them. This one is actually a bit different than the other royal movies and is lovely. It succeeds in making the audience watch the movie, enjoy it and leave smiling. These are not high budget movies. For those that have more complex plots and fancier special effects, go to the movie theater. Also, this in not filmed in Canada which is where most of the Hallmark films are filmed recently, but in Utah. Enjoy the movie!

  • Meh...

I LIKE the Hallmark Royal movies generally, but this one is just a Stinker. Location is the same tired place they shoot many of their movies....and the cast is just "meh" -So it's supposed to look realistic when a prince stays in a "resort" that looks like a 2 star hotel?? And allll those BOWS? Every holiday, Hallmark really likes using Bows to decorate with....Dollar store bows.... soooooo cheesy! Kind of like the dresses in the pseudo royal ballroom scenes. The dresses look like mediocre department store prom gowns, not like what you'd expect from a costume drama team. The prince is cute, but a bit juvenile (maybe it's just the awful dialog). Taylor Cole is not really a good on screen match for him either...she seems older than him, and he's exceptionally immature. There really isn't any on screen chemistry I find the least bit believable. She did REALLY well opposite the guy in Christmas in Homestead! The royal theme in this one is more cliché than some of the better ones. I loved the following because they had good cast, and beautiful locations: A Royal Christmas (they had the cute chemistry, good cast, beautiful location) , A Crown for Christmas (5 stars cast, chemistry, location), A Princess for Christmas (awesome chemistry, beautiful location). My Summer Prince does not even come close to these others. I'm tired of Hallmark using the same Utah, and Pacific Northwest locations. I've even spotted repeat homes and locations used in movies., that just makes me feel tired of seeing the same old same old....The past year just hasn't been the best for Hallmark. More stinkers than good goodies. A movie doesn't have to be "saccharine sweet" to be good and wholesome. It insults my intelligence. And pleaseeee....EVERY single Hallmark film seems to have one thing in common, and that's that there is ONE NEAR-MISS KISS (insert eye roll..because someone interrupted it) and then one final kiss to end the show. (Insert another eye roll) If kissing is so bad, then Hallmark better stick to The Duggar family Side-Hug. Ughhhh. In any case, this movie falls into the "stinker" pile

  • Cute and Charming!

I don't understand the hate this movie has gotten from other reviewers. This is a Hallmark movie, not an Oscar nominee. It marks off every detail on a rom-com checklist, and does it with a better-than-normal script. I literally laughed out loud more than once. I also believe it was perfectly cast. I recommend this one to any fan of Hallmark.
