Thomas Michael, Paolo Mancini, Chris Klein and Joe Mantegna star in director Matthiew Klinck's holiday-themed comedy concerning two downsized Easter bunnies whose friendship starts to suffer when the multi-national corporation that owns all holidays decides to make some serious cutbacks. Hank and Mike are the Felix Unger and Oscar Madison of holiday mascots: They may seem like a mismatched pair yet their differences are precisely what's kept them together all these years. Two Easter bunnies get laid off and are forced to find a new job
OK, so I saw all the negative comments about the plot summary for this movie on the message boards and just had to write a little review. This movie was listed on the Cinevegas schedule and I had no intention of going to see it, but there was nothing else going on, so I went with two friends that read the summary and felt the same way I did, "this is gonna suck." Were we totally wrong. The whole theater laughed from start to finish! Hank and Mike are two Easter bunnies that work one day out of the year delivering chocolate Easter eggs to the children on their route because of the "No Child Left Behind" act. Chris Klein's character sees the potential to turn a profit on Easter by laying off some Easter bunnies and selling advertising on the chocolate easter egg wrappers; thus, Hank and Mike get laid off, leaving them with a problem...what other occupation can a Easter bunny do? We then follow Hank and Mike along while they look for a new job and figure out how to get their old one back. Well, my summary doesn't make the movie sound any better, but this is a tongue in cheek comedy with some really racy humor. Hank played by Thomas Michael has so many great one-liners, me and my friends are still laughing about some of them. I believe he pretty much carried the movie as the horny, beer drinking, chain smoking Easter bunny. Chris Klein was OK in this movie, he had one great part where he sings in a lounge a really unromantic love song, I laughed so hard, I cried. If you like comedies and get the chance to see this movie, go see it, or at least rent it if you see it at the video store because it is worth it, it's hilarious. You should take my word, because I never write movie reviews on here.
Hilarious, twisted, offbeat humor
I liked this comedy a lot more than I expected to when I got my hands on the screener. A film about two easter bunnies getting fired could go wrong in a lot of ways. But I found myself laughing out loud even though I was watching by myself which is rare. There's some humor to be had in just watching guys in grubby easter bunny suits smoke, drink and screw their way through the film, but they also got a hold of Chris Klein for the role of Hubris the executive. He has perfect delivery and look for this market-gibberish-spewing near-con man, and his drunken karaoke performance of some The Burning Hells song I can't remember had me rolling. Thomas Michael comes across very well as the sarcastic substance-abusing womanizer and Paolo Mancini serves very well in his role as the increasingly fed-up straight man who can only take so much before the inevitable explosion. Mantegna was strangely in the background considering he is probably the most accomplished actor in the film, but I guess there wasn't much of a role for him really. The bunny suits make for a lot of sight gags, especially the roid-raging bodybuilder who seems oddly at home in pink fur, and the scenes of them doing basic hygiene in costume. Overall I thought it was one of the funnier comedies of the year but perhaps I just like bunny suits and hard living.
Unexpected genuine comedy
I rented this movie without knowing anything about it and with no expectations. It turned out to be one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time. Thomas Michael plays the role of a womanising, heavy drinker who is quite comfortable with his imperfections very well. His character is the deadpan needed for the running jokes throughout the movie. Mike, Paolo Mancini, lives for Easter and brilliantly plays the role of the straight laced guy, who's ready to snap at any moment. Hank and Mike complement each other perfectly, as the two Easter bunnies, with their individual glaring character flaws helping to highlight the underlying sense of reality throughout the film. A stand out performance is Chris Klein, who plays an excellent role as a cut-throat contractor hellbent on making a fast buck at anyones expense, and has one of the best scenes singing The Burning Hells karaoke demonstrating how his character may be more tragic than the two bunnies put together. The bunny suits are a brilliant visual aid and work extremely well to emphasise the darkest moments, of an already extremely dry comedy. The film would still work without the suits and Easter bunnies, but it would lack the satire along with the ability to draw you into a universe where being an Easter bunny is a job and that is how it is. The film is not a rip-roaring comedy adventure in the world of hilarious Easter bunnys, but rather a tragic reality, where you cant help but laugh at the flaws, interactions and one liners the well developed characters have to offer, something akin to Arrested Development or Office Space as opposed to American Pie or anything with Rob Schneider. If you take the time and allow yourself to be taken into their world without expectations of a blockbuster comedy, I hope you will be thankful and enjoy this gem that slipped under the radar.
Shockingly Good
Literally went into this movie with zero clue of what to expect, and now that I've seen it, I'm really happy I did. It's not the silliness humor that some people may have expected when they saw to guys in bunny suits on the poster, it's a darker humor that is delivered perfectly. One of my favorite things about this movie is that it actually has it's serious moments, it's drama (as well as it's funny ones, actually a lot of really funny ones), but even during the most serious moments you have to laugh when you remember that these are two Easter bunnies. One, a chain-smoking, self-loathing slacker that drinks too much; the other an idealist riddled with low self-esteem, a bad knee, and an affinity for sweets. Simply enough, if they weren't wearing bunny suits people would praise the seriousness and remark on the depth of the social commentary. But you still get all that, just with bunny suits. Which you just can't beat. I liked it in the first 5 minutes. I really liked it by 10 minutes. I loved it by 20 minutes.
good dry humor, like it used to be.
I'd say this movie was worth watching thanks to the humor and whole concept of it all. I just like how confused at first I was what with guys in bunny costumes, but when I realized they WERE the easter bunnies it put a whole different perspective on the way this film was approached. It was meant to be a comedy. I thought the guys did a great job with their roles and in the suits they were wearing. Me & my roommate especially love the scene when the self-centered business guy is singing at the bar. Its great! Though, that scene does not actually add much to the story/plot it is incredibly entertaining. There may be some holes in the overall story including the whole easter bunny middle aged men scenario that isn't ever explained. I think it adds character to the flick, leaves room for interpretation & conversation. As a whole I like this movie a lot, and would definitely recommend anyone who likes kinda slow but comedic dialogue. I enjoyed it, hope you do too.
