Schoolboy Martin, bright but small for his age, has to move and change school because of his mother's new jobs, while only his father really tries to understand him. Even before he reaches class he bumps into cocky, athletic rascal Oliver. It seems like Oliver's best friend Silke (a girl) taking to Martin will aggravate their tension, but she actually gets them to spend time together and grow closer. Martin even takes the blame, which neither parent understands, for Oliver smoking in class, a third strike meaning expulsion. Oliver's knavish mischief actually stems from his dad's drinking problem and its root, his ma's infidelity. When he runs away, Martin takes him in.

Blöde Mütze! (2007) Reviews

  • The film you want (your kids) to see

"Blöde Mütze!" is a German 1.5-hour film from 2007, so this one has its 10th anniversary this year already, but to me it felt newer. The writer and director is Johannes Schmid and it is probably his most known work still. It is a coming-of-age movie that is mostly for younger audiences, teenagers etc., but those grown-ups young at heart will also have a fairly good time watching. Just like I did. The focus here is on a boy who gets to a new school and we find out how he makes friends with a girl and boy, who initially seemed like his enemy. The film is never preaching anything, actually it depicts these characters as rather unlikable such as the main character's mother. At least she came off like that to me. All the kids mostly struggle with the problems their parents got really and their friendship is an anchor that helps them to deal. But when developments have a negative impact on their friendship as well, things look pretty bad. This is perhaps when the film is at its weakest too, it becomes slightly generic and predictable there and also goes over the top with the drama near the end, the potential drowning scene, the heart attack especially and then the rushed-in solution eventually. But the 70 minutes before that were really convincing and they did feel nicely realistic I must say. I very much enjoyed the film and all the actors made a good job too. Hey they even gave Moniva Ivancal a tolerable part and she was working, which is pretty impressive as she is very unlikable to me and also not an actress in my opinion. The most known cast member is probably Julia Koschitz, but she only appears in one scene. The film belongs 100% to the kids and they prove that they have the talent when they are not in films with horrible scripts like the "Wilde Kerle" franchise. I also liked Eisleb a lot in the Frau Holle film she made after this one here. It's a shame they apparently all chose other career paths away from the film industry. But if it makes them happy, then I am happy. I give this film here (known internationally as "Silly's Sweet Summer", another reference to how one boy calls the other I believe, a thumbs-up. It is really worth checking out thanks to the good writing and authenticity from start to (almost) finish and actually that last scene really made me want to go for a swim. Go see it.
