At Cafe 6 (2016) Reviews
This was a good movie...
I do enjoy the Asian cinema and usually gobble up just about every movie that I get the chance to watch, often without knowing just what I am sitting down to watch. And such was the case also here with "At Cafe 6". I hadn't heard about it, and I had no idea what it was about. The movie just landed on my desk at the right time, so of course I jumped at the chance to get to see it. "At Cafe 6" turned out to be a mixture of different genres, but with a bigger part of an romantic comedy, but mixed up with an coming-of-age approach and some drama elements as well. This turned out to be a mixture that worked out well enough in favor of the movie, and director Neal Wu actually managed to pull through with a good and wholesomely entertaining movie. As a romantic comedy, you should perhaps put the comedy in the background and set your sights on the romantic aspects, because that is what is dominant throughout the movie. So don't sit down to watch "At Cafe 6" with the hopes of ending up laughing yourself to tears. One of the really good things about "At Cafe 6" was the character gallery, because the writers had really managed to come up with some very detailed and interesting characters. And better yet, they were characters that you could bond with, sympathize with and relate to. So a major thumbs up for that. The only real drawback to this movie is that it just doesn't seem to be the type of movie that you will watch more than once. And if you do so, then it is probably with several years in between with enough time to have forgotten about the story here. All in all, a good movie and a movie that definitely is worth taking the time to sit down and watch, especially if you enjoy Asian romantic comedies.
Watch Our Times (2015) instead
"At Cafe 6" has been compared to other Taiwanese coming-of-age movies such as Your Are The Apple of My Eye (2011) and Our Times (2014), but "At Cafe 6" falls far short. Negatives include poor casting of the leads (a Mainland Chinese and Hong Konger playing native Taiwanese students), a weakly developed female protagonist who is highly unlikeable and prone to platitudes, and overall lack of depth. The highlight was Austin Lin's strong performance in his supporting role. There is a major plot twist, but ultimately the movie fails to engage. If you are new to the genre, highly recommend the classic Our Times as a much stronger introduction.
